Large Lignum Vitae Loving Cup English 17th century
Substancial Lignum Vitae Loving Cup, with ribbed decoration English c.1680.
Later Silver shield c.1730. with Coat of arms representing the mariage of the third son of the original owners combined and his new wifes family crest. Probably given to them as a wedding present, thus passing this important Family Loving cup down the family, where the " medicinal " properties of Lignum Vitae (Tree of Life) would infuse the drink contained therein.
Loving Cups were filled with alcohol and passed around Family gatherings , celebrations and special occasions for everyone to have a sip.
